Taekwondo!
Before moving to the United States last year to be with her adopted family, one of our youth — a girl named K.B. — was a taekwondo champion and a member of the Lesotho national team. K.B. was just the beginning. Five of our kids are now participating in taekwondo. Two of them — Mookho and Lipuo — are now on the national team and bringing home medals from regional competitions.
“Our children have such a great interest in this sport,” Mamonyane says. “It has been their favorite.”
Taekwondo is a martial art form that originated in Korea. It is characterized by punching and kicking techniques, with an emphasis on head-height kicks, jumping spinning kicks, and fast kicking techniques. The sport requires strength of body, but it also develops strength of mind.
Participation in local sports is one way that we integrate our children and teens into the community, while cultivating learning and discipline beyond the classroom.
Taekwondo has been an Olympic sport since 2000. And yes, our participants dream of becoming Olympic athletes and winning gold medals. We’ll keep you informed of their progress!
