Lesotho Changed Me Profoundly

My journey began with a desire to see firsthand how faith is transforming lives in southern Africa. Nearly four years ago, I had the opportunity to participate in a mission trip to visit the children and staff at Ministry of Hope Lesotho. We spent a week doing small projects around the home and playing and singing with the children.
My assignment was to bring toys the children could play with outside. I brought hula hoops (purchased in neighboring South Africa). It was great fun to watch them experiment and create games for everyone to enjoy.
What I experienced in Lesotho changed me profoundly.
Meeting the children, hearing their stories, and witnessing the dedication of the local staff gave me a deep appreciation for the ministry’s impact and mission. The children of Lesotho are resilient, joyful and inspiring. Their courage in the face of hardship reminded me of what truly matters. Plus I got to reinvigorate my hula hoop skills!
After returning home, I knew I wanted to stay involved. Serving on the board was the next step in that journey. It has been a privilege to help guide the organization’s work and advocate for its mission.
I have been blessed to partner with my home congregation in helping connect others with opportunities to make a meaningful difference in the lives of vulnerable children by visiting Ministry of Hope Lesotho and contributing to the well-being of the children. (Note: University Presbyterian recently funded the installation of our new restroom and shower facility.)
Serving on the board has strengthened my faith and broadened my perspective.
It has shown me how a community of committed people can come together across continents to create lasting change. Knowing that our efforts help provide education, health care, nutrition, nurturing care and hope for a brighter future is both humbling and deeply fulfilling. And seeing the success of former residents as they make a future for themselves gives me great joy.
Ministry of Hope Lesotho is more than an organization; it is a family united by compassion, faith and a shared belief in the God-given potential of every child. I am grateful to be part of this ministry.
